What’s the Difference Between CBD and THC?
When users first think about trying CBD one of their biggest concerns is often whether it will make them high and unable to function.
When taking a CBD oil which meets the legal requirements you will never experience a high. This is because CBD does not contain THC, the cannabinoid which is responsible for the feelings of euphoria that marijuana produces.
But what’s the difference between CBD and THC? And how does it affect the body? Here’s what you need to know.
What are CBD and THC?
Despite the fact that they have a very different effect on the body, THC and CBD are both types of cannabinoid.
Cannabinoids are a substance which is found naturally in cannabis plants. There are many different types of cannabinoids but THC and CBD are the two that most people have heard of.
Cannabinoids all work with the endocannabinoid system in the body in different ways, and as a result, the effect can be markedly different.
The endocannabinoid system in the body isn’t involved in any of the critical functions such as breathing, but influences many other parts of the body such as mood, memory, sleep and reproduction.
This is why scientists are so excited about the potential effect of cannabinoids on the body. It’s a fairly new area of medicine and the full potential of cannabinoids is not yet known.
How are CBD and THC Different?
Although CBD and THC have the same molecular formula and chemical composition, the way their atoms are arranged is completely different. This small but key variable is vital because it completely transforms the effect that they have on the human body.
The endocannabinoid system has receptors which act as the eyes and ears of the cell. They are constantly looking to see what’s happening in the body so the cell can react accordingly.
THC binds with the endocannabinoid receptors and creates a psychoactive effect, inducing euphoria, extreme relaxation and sometimes sleepiness. THC is what’s known as an agonist because it binds to the receptor.
This isn’t the case with CBD as it’s an antagonist. This means although it interacts with the receptors it doesn’t actually bind to them. This is the reason why it’s impossible for CBD to create a high without the presence of THC.
As well as the differences on the body, there is a very big difference in how THC and CBD are treated by the law.
CBD oil and CBD products are completely legal to buy - providing they don’t contain more than 0.2% THC. This means that when you buy CBD products from a reputable source, there may be a very small trace amount of THC, but not enough to make you feel high.
By contrast, it isn’t legal to buy THC products in the UK for any reason. Some medicinal benefits to THC have been identified but the NHS uses a synthetically manufactured version of THC, not the plant extract.
